Description

Collection includes transcripts of hearings before the Subcommittee on Public Lands of the U.S. House Committee on Interior and Insular Affairs (86th Congress) considering various proposals for the establishment of the Cape Cod National Seashore Park, minutes of the Cape Cod National Seashore Advisory Commission, regional inventory reports of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, National Shoreline Study (concerning shore protection), and master plans for the park

These documents were deposited by U.S. Representative Hasting Keith and Advisory Board Member Robert McNeece

Hasting Keith (1915-2005) was a member of the Massachusetts State Senate, 1953-1956. He was elected as Republican to the United States Congress, 1959-1973. Mr. Keith sponsored the National Seashore bill and worked for its legislation, stressing the conservation as opposed to recreational aspects of this project. Robert McNeece was a member of the Chatham Board of Selectmen in 1962 and a member of the Cape Cod National Seashore Advisory Commission

The Cape Cod National Seashore was created on August 7, 1961. Today it encompasses 43,500 acres and includes nearly 40 miles of seashore along the eastern facing Atlantic coast towns of Provincetown, Truro, Wellfleet, Eastham, Orleans, and Chatham. The Cape Cod National Seaxhore is run by the National Park Service with the dual goal of protecting precious, ecologically fragile land, while allowing public access to a unique natural resource
